' ' . • . j NOTES AND COMMENTS I The gale which ttcib behind the horses i is reckoned to have- had a good deal to do ■ with the remarkable time made by Kilboyno in the Criterion Handicap, six fur- i longs, at Eiccarton on Saturday. As the ; Dunedin horse knocked such a lump oU j the previous best for the course, it must ; have been a pretty effective zephyr. i Sir Gco. Clifford is among the victims ,\ ot influenza, and ho was not present at < Eiccarton when Onslaught won the big ; handicap for him on Wednesday.- ■ '- Prior to last Monday Derrett, Huxtablo, P. White, and Hewitt had each ridden the ; winners of two New Zealand Cups. S. ' Lindsay won the race on three occasions, ! and Derret, in addition to winning twice, also ehared the honours of a dead-heat when he rode Fulmen in 1900. H. Gray, the rider of Bridge and Sasanof, has now added his namo to the short list of those who have two Cups to their credit. Snub, who won the Canterbury Cup, had not scored in a race eince January of this year, when ho the principal handicap at the Pahiatiia meeting. Apropos of the-eligibility of geldinge to participate, in claseio events, an American writer recently said that if the object of racing is the;.improvement, in the breed oi horses tho only way to discourage tho practice-of. .unsexing stallions is to limit the number of races in which geldings ■ma-y...tolie,part on-any--terms whatever. Sir Hippo is tho only horeo that has won the New Zealand Cup and Auckland Cup in the one' season. Warstep won the Auckland Cup, but had to split winning honours with Indigo in the New Zealand Cup.

The totalisator is still in anything but general favour in Australia. At a recent meeting held at Quirlndi no investments were.receivod on several races, and in another backers of tho winner actually lost money.

A Perth pa-per statee that a lady- puntof invested 2s. |d. on a. horse, and, on the all-up principal, played it up on sevon consecutive placo-getters. The half-crown ran into over £200; but unfortunately for tho lady, the investment was made with a bookmaker -who operates on a £25 limit, and ehe had to be content with that amount.

Meleo got a bad run in the early part of the Spring Plate, and he'niado rip hie ground too soon, and the effort to get near tho leaders Eettled his chance.

■~ It appears that there were some omissions from the telegraphed list of acceptors for tho Metropolitan Handicap, ■which is to be run at Kiccarton to-day. Tho Christchurch "Sun" gives the list as follows :-Client, 9st. 41b.; Snub. 9st. 21b.; Margerine, Bat.; Kllnioon, 7st. 131b.; Rorke'a Drift, 7et. 121b.; Glendower, 7st. 91b.; Koee Pink, 7st. 71b.; Devotion, 7et. 71b.; ilaecot, 7st. 71b.: Sedd-el-Bahr, 7at. 31b.: Cynic Ist. 21b.; Kilrush. 7st. lib.; Battle Bong. 7st.; Troseida, 7et.; Karo, 7st. ; Dusky Eve, 78t.; Mazama, Sst. 71b.; Royal Star, 6st. 71b.; Tarnish, 6et. 71b.; Bieinßham, 6st.
