V.C. MAN KILLED IN ACTION. (Special Dispatch from the New Zealand Official AVar Correspondent, Captain . Malcolm Ross.) October 25. Yesterday I mentioned that one of our bravest soldiers was killed in tho lighting that gained us the Escaillon bridgeheads. Tho reference was to Sergeant Henry James Nicholas, V.C, of thoiirst Canterbury Regiment. Ho was shot through the head "while demanding tho surrender of some enemy soldiers wnom ■ho saw vaguely in the darkness., • Tho incident that gained him ms V ictoria Cross occurred last year in very difficult fighting at Polderhoek Chateau. Ho was then a private with a Lewis gun section. Our men met with very severe machine-gun firo, and Nicholas, rushing forward, shot the officer, who was m command of a strong point, and overcame tlie remainder of the garrison by means of bombs and the bayonet, lour prisoner*' and the machine-gun were captured. Subsequently, when the advance had reached its limit and our men woro still hard pressed, lie collected ammunition under heavy rifle and machinegun fire.
