ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY

The annual meeting of the Wellington Zoological Society was held on Monday evening, the v president (Mr. Thomas Fathers) being in the chair. ■ The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Messrs. J. B. Thwaites, M.A., K. Darroch, F. Bennett, and J. Thomas woro elected members of the society. Officers wore elected as follow:—President, Mr. T. Fathers (re-elected); secretary and treasurer, Mr. John Castle (reelected); vice-nresidents, Veil. Archdeacon Devoy, S.M.,"Ecv. Dr. J. T. Pinfold, D.D., Rev E. Drake. Messrs. B. A. Wright, M.P.. H. A. Parkinson. M.A.. C. J. Lockwood, E. Rend, and R. Brown; executive, Mesdames Pollock. Underwood, Castle, and Fathers, Rev J. Crewes, Messrs R. H. Chinclien, E. Collie, H. ,T. Crewes, A. Crosby, R. Dnrroch. M- G. Grenside, A. It. Hornblow. J. A. Martin, R. Morrish, A. E. Parker. J. Pollock, S. H Underwood, C. M. Luke. R. Ferguson, H. Soxton, and G. E. Fownes. ■■ The chairman suggested that the bovernment might with advantage commemorate the-approach of nea«e by eiving an annual grant to tho Wellington °Mr. H. J. Crowes, son of the ex-presi-dent, read a paper, his topic being. Ihe Eyes of tho Animals in tho Zoo. i« described eyes generally, classified the Zoo animals, and remarked on the peculiarities of the eyes of each class, me secretary (Mr. Castle) culoeised the paper; but expressed the thought that the proportion devoted to book learning was rather too large in comparison with thiit dealing particularly with the aiumnls in our Zoo. Ho referred more especially to tho salamander or Japanese newt Hip Rev Mr Crowes flsked who but Councillor Castle or his fdlow-councillors could got to look into the eyes of the kiwis and the salamander. The Rev. Dr. Pinfold asked what special ,fncijities were granted to studonts of biology to enable them to study tho animals in the Zoo closely. An animated discussion followed, in which several members participated.
