NAVY'S PROUD RECORD London, November 4. "Op to October 26 the Admiralty convoyed 75,722 merchantmen, of which 433, or .51 per cent, were lost. The Atlantic convoys from June 26, 1917, to October 5, 1918 i comprised 14,968 ships, of a total gross tonnage of 77,057,231. Of these, 118 vessels ivere lost, the total tonnage being 654,288. To carry the 1918 Argentine wheat crop, 307 ships, of a tonnage of 1,46(1,000, were convoyed, and only one was lost. Altogether twenty-six million tons of food and thirty-five million tons of munitions were convoyed to the United Kingdom. Whereas prior to the convoy system we lost 10 per cent, of ships, the present rate of loss is approximately 1 per cent. The relative risk' of loss to, and from th& United Kingdom for the three quarters of 1918 shows a most satisfactory. reduction. Tho total traffic in that period increased by ona-third, while the risk of loss decreased by one-half. Tho success of tho convoy system ' was largely duo to the way the mteicantile shipmasters co-operated. Their skill in keeping stations in bad weather and under attack \vas splendid.—Aus.-N.Z.
