CITY MILK SCHEME
TO START ON DECEMBER 1 TWO. APPOINTMENf S MADE Interviewed' yesterday Councillor C. B. Norwood, chairman of the City Council's Milk Committee,' stated that very satisfactory progress was being 'made, towards Twinging the council's scheme to fruition. Since the lust public announcement two important appointments had been made. One was the appointment of Mr. P. C. Peters, of Wellington, as distribution superintendent. Mr. Peters was for some years jn the {employ of the Now . Zealand Express Company, in charge of the transport work and parcel delivery department, and lias a very thorough knowledge of 1 the city. He went to Wanganui some thief years ago to initiate the coupon and block system in connection with the bread and milk deliveries in that town, anil therefore has a thorough knowledge of the'.working of the system. He then returned'.to take up .an important position with the New Express Company, and leaves that employ to enter that of the City Council.,
Tho other appointment "niade is that of Mr. Steele tG be manager of the central clearing station. Mr. Steele, who is an officer of.tho Agricultural Department,' has.excellent credentials, and his duties will involve the receiving and testing of the milk'at the station to ensure.that nothing but the pure product will bo sent out for distribution, and the Milk Committee is confident that the' city is fortunate in obtaining the services of such a man. ' ' '
'■Alterations- were at present being made, Councillor Norwood said, to the central station in. Dixon Street, and it was confidently hoped that all would bo in readiness for a start to be made- with the new system •on or about 'December 1. The committee was acquiring a strip of land at the rear of tho premises (the lato Fresh Pood and Ice Company's premises) for a needed extension of tho buildings. ' There were some old cottages .and a stable at the back of. the block which the committee thought, it advisable to clear out altogether,, in view of tho delicate nature of tho foodstuff it had to handle, and those properties were to be acquired ,undor the .Public Works Act in order to provide for extensions that would be needed in the not-fiir-distant future. The acquisition of those-properties' would also give entranco to Howe's Lane, and would make for convenience, in handling the heavy traffi'c in connection with -the central station.
The committee required 'the support and assistance of the public in' commencing'the scheme, winch included tho purchase of milk by coupons, really the only way to.-ensure that, the' public would secure its milk at a minimum price., For example, Councillor Norwood stated that on October 1 the farmers reduced tho price of milk to the vendors by 2d, per'gallon;.but up to date, that reduction had not been passed on to the public, so that the vendors were gaining their full winter profit, 'plus the i!d. per gallon allowed by the dairy fanners since October 1. AVhen the council had of tho ,milk system the public would at'once receive fhe full benefit of any-reduction in the price of milk madoo by'the farmers The committee had now., recorded! by a card system' the requirements of all save some '300 houses in Wellington, and it behoved tho heads or' all households who-had not so far furnished the committee with their requirements to do so at once. Otherwise they could, not be attended to when the system came, .into operation on ■ December 1. ...
Tho acquisition.of a country station at Otaki was in full train,. and that supply as u*governor, in conjunction with the 6upply from purely local.districts, would ensure tho city more than an .adequate supply of milk for nine months of tho •year. It was at present anticipated that the supply would- have to lie augmented in tho.three winter, months from Wairarapa, Wahganui, and even 'I'aranaki. ° : ' ' ' '
