' WELLINGTON CLUB'S CHAMPION-- . SHIP.-'-.
\s stated in our last weeks notes, Messrs. W. E. Mason and A.- W. O. Davies have tied for the championship of tlio Wellington Cliess Club; alio playoff, was commenced on Saturday ovening, and is to continue until one player scores three games. Davies had the move in the first game, and used the Queen's Pawn opening.' Mason annexed a pawn in the mid-game, which .Davies. couli* havo regained some 'moves later, but he preferred to play for positioh. A.movo was sealed at 11 p.iii./.Tvhen the game, ■which requires "a second sitting, was in a very even state. Davies once more showed that iie"is~uot afraid to advance the pawns standing in front of his castled king. A most interesting and instructive ending'may bo looked for. The other fourteen competitors are busy getting the outstanding games played off, tlio number of which has now been reduced to nineteen. Thero is likely to be a close, -finish ■ between'; "Messrs. Godtsclmlk, Barnes,' and Kelling : for third place, and' also ''an ' interesting; struggle for the-fourth,--fifthj;'a'nd'.sixth places. • : "■' : - : ' "'■ -y. ..
