By a shortage of firemen the departure forLyttelton of the ferry steamer Maori , was delayed until early this morning, owing to the absence yesterday afternoon of a number of her crew. Yesterday jbciug the first of rJie month the wages were paid, also as required by law the ship's articles were changed, and when i o'clock arrived, the vessel's usual hour of departure, the full complement of firemon and trimmers had not reported for duty. Officials of the Union Company had ,n' busy, .lime in trying to find the rest of the crew. At 5 "p.m. the necessary complement of fifteen iiremen and nine trimmers was short by eight, but in the next hour six more had returned to the ship. It was by that time too late to cross Cook Strait in daylight, so the vessel's departure had to be postponed until early this morning. Shortly after 6 o'clock the ship left tho wharf to anchor in the stream, and later in the evening two new firemen ivere persuaded to join to complete the crew.
