Captain" T. W. Iliithcrfiml, son of the late Mr. John Eutherfurd, of Wairere, Masterton, has died from pneumonia in a .hospital in Persia. The deceased left with the Main Body as ii, sergeant.

'■'The' staff of defence.-Headquarters gathered on Thursday afternoon to gjve a fiond-off to Mr. K Bond, assistant Recovde clerk, who has been in the service of. the Defence Department for nineteen years, and who went into camp yesterday. On behalf of the staff, Captain Ro'ckstrow presented Mr. Bond with a marble clock, and expressed the wi'dwl wishes of'all for the-welfare of the departing officer and a'safe return. ' 'Private W.' A. Lambert,' mentioned in the recent dispatches as having been awarded the .Military Medal, is tho fourth ..sou of Captain G. Lambert ot Wellington... .Private Lambert left i\ew Zealand with the Twenty-first Rcinlorcements'as a sergeant, and has been attached to the Sniping Corps ever since, and,has been -.gassed on two occasions. Another eon, Corporal G. V. Lambert, who left with the' Sixteenth' Reinforcements, was also sergeant when ho lott New Zealand. Corporal G. V. Lambert, owing to illness, is-.-now-unfit to return to tho line; and has been -transferred to the Headquarters Staff in London. He obtained, bia early education in Coromandel. and gained a raining scholarship from the local School of Alines'. He studied at the Auckland University and Victoria College, Wellington, and graduated M.Sc, .with first-class honours, in geology. Be-fore-volunteering., for active, service, Lieutenant Broadgate.-was. attached to the staff, of .the New Zealand Geological Survey.. . . . ■ '. -
Scuund-Lienleiiant L. J. Shaw, who was killed in. aetiou ■on September !), was born at Aliningntapere,'. U'-hatigurei. At an early age lie entered the employ of the Waihi Gold Mining Company, and studied chemistry, assaying, and metallurgy at the Wuihi School . of Jiines. Liner he was on the staff of the Government Laboratory at Wellington. He continued his studies at Victoria College, and was preparing for the final examination for liis B.b'e. when he enlisted with the Seventh. Reinforcements. He left New Zealand as a corponil, being promoted sergeant on active service. He took part in the Gallipoli campaign, and was in the last detachment but one to leave the peninsula. . He saw considerable active service in Prance, and na wounded just prior to the Battle of the Somnie. After his convalescence he was recommended for a commission and returned to New Zealand, being posted to the 1 hirty-sevendi Eeinforcements, with, which lie again left for the front. Lieutenant Shaw was a keen footballer, winning representative honours at Waihi and at Victoria Collide. He "was a member of the New' Zealand inter-collegiate team which played with great success in Sydney in 1913. As a middle distance runner he put up .some creditable performances. , Two other members of the family are on--active-, service, namely, iiiileman J.
