WATERSIDE ACCIDENTS
THE COMMISSION'S RECOMMENDA- - . TIONS. "•' Replying to a question in the House of Representatives'yesterday with reference to the recommendations of the Waterside Accidents Commission, ■ the Minister of Marine (Hon. T. M. Wilford) said that twenty-seven recommendations had been agreed to. by all the. members of the Commission, and nine had been decided by himself after hearing the views of■ the members. - It would be necessary to ninend the Harbours Act'and the Shipping and Seamen Act in order to give effect "to all'.tho recommendations, and the necessary legislation was now being prepared. : ' -~..'
The Minister added that there had been a misapprehension regarding ' the finding of the Commission with reference to hatches. It had been stated, after nu accident in Auckland, that the man would have been saved if a net had been- ; placed under the hatch in accordance, withr the Commission's recommendation.'' The Commission, as a matter of fjict, had not recommended the use'of netsjin this way, and the legislation ijould not provide for their iise. Tho Commission had suggested that hatches and cross-beams should be removed without men going oh tho hatch, ,'and a regulation ivas being made accordingly. .
