SOLDIERS' APPEALS
MEN WHO HAVE SERVED MILITARY BOARD'S DECISIONS The Second Wellington Military Service Board sat in the city yesterday. Sir. J. W. Poynton, S.M., is the chairman of the board, and the other members of Hie board are Messrs. T. A. Bauniber and F. Curtice.
A number of applications respecting soldiers were made, and these were dealt with ns follow:—James \Y*. MacLachlan, on active service, return and discharge recommended; Sergeant James M'Leary, on active service, three months' leave recommended; Private Carolau Wilson,, on activo service, no recommendation; Sapper James Maddock, on active service, no recommendation; Private Willie Oswald, on active service, return and three months' leave recommended; Private John Cole, on active service, return and six mouths' leavo recommended; Private W. K. Tease, of Brooklyn, on active service, return to New Zealand and discharge if unfit recommended; Private G. P. Coombe, on active service, return and discharge recommended; Stanley Parkinson, on active service, three. months leave recommended; 2nd Lieutenant J. Jackson, Heretaunga, on active service, iiix months' leave recommended; M. J. O'Hallorau, Lower Hutt, on activo service, discharge recommended; Private W. K. Wood, on active service, return and if unfit discharge recommended; It. H. Henry, on active service, return and three*months' leave ■recommended; Gunner H. N. Eemforcement, Trentbam, recommended that he remain in New Zealand till Januarys' Private W. li. Munro, 43rd Specialists, Featherston, discharge' recommended; Chas L. Mathias, 40th Reinforcements, Featherston, discharge recommended; Private H. Wyke, on active service, three months' leave recommended; John S. Golding, 47th N.F.A., Featherston, leave till January 5 |recommended. Three appeals for' members of the Shearers' Union were made with .the following result -.-George M'Laughaii Wellington, leave till March draft; Thomas Scales, Dannovirke, adjourned till Jlaicli, Lawson Stewart, Hinakura, leave till November draft..
Decisions in other -appeals were:--Harry Clark, foreman, adjourned till March; Thos. Foley, contractor, adjourned till' March; Chas W. Budd, agent Day's Bay, adjourned till February 12, Patrick Reginald Walker, linesman, adjourned till March; Darcy.lv. Hogar. electrician and linesman, adjourned till March; Hugh Hunter, electrician, adjourned sine"die; Alexander S Duncan sas retort setter, adjourned till March, Frederick Staeey, gas retort setter, adjourned till March. -. , The following oases were dealt with at ft sitting of the Board on Wednesday:—. a Haroll B. Kordoll. farmer Palmntamu (the only one on, the farm), and Cecil Henry Clinkard, Civi , Servant Lyall Bav (the fifth son, whose four brothers have served or are serving) were granted leave sine die. ,j John F. Mackay, Miandallah, a clew in the Gear Company, was appealed tor by the company on the ground that his services are necessary. The stall, it was represented, had been depleted owing to so many having gone to the front, the case will be considered again m January. Lionel A. R. Upton, manager of the Candle Works, Petone (employers appeal), had his case adjourned to the February sitting. ' The Loan and Mercantile Agency Company appealed on beholf of Melton b. Stranger,, live stock auctioneer, Auckland. . It was stated that this was the first appeal the company had made on behalf of! the Auckland staff, of which thirty-two had gone to the front. William Cayloss, coal dealer, Brooklyn, said he had no' employee, and could not dispose of his business without incurring an entire loss. He had been m the business five and a half years, and his only assistant was his wife. The case was adjourned to the March sitting. Lionel John Picot, coal and produce dealer, Karori, said ho had been in business about twelve years. He had been .unable to dispose of the business. One brother was at the front, and another, who was in business, had been turned down. The case was adjourned to the February sitting. . • Frank Charles Darnell, commercial traveller,. Karori, appealed for family reasons. . An adjournment until March was granted. John R, Cooper, bricklayer, Wellington, appealed for the same reason, and was granted an adjournment until the March sitting. . . , Clarence R. Best, farmer, Ohanu, for whom Mr. G. Watson appeared, said he was tho only son remaining to look after his father's and brother's farms. His only brother was at the front. One of the farms wns at Ohariu, and the other at Levin. The Ohariu farm' was 34G acres, and the Levin farm 100 acres. His brother went away in Juno last. Tho case was adjourned until tho March sitting. . Charles Wluteman, sheep and dairy farmer, Upper Hutt, said lie had five brothers, two of whom were at the war. It was difficult to get labour, and most of his time was taken up in dealing with noxious weeds, lie supplied milk to Trentham Camp, Wellington, and tho Izard Convalescent Home. The enso was ndjournod to the March sitting.
Eugene E. Pollard, foreman eailmaker, Bevhampore, appealed for family reasons. The case" was adjourned until March.
Charles John Duffy, milk vendor, Wellington, for whom Mr. H. F. O'Lenry appeared, appealed on the ground that he was manager of the Karori Milk Supply Company, to which his services were essenfi.il. Ho was willing to go into camp if the company was taken over and its affairs' wound up. An adjournment til! March was granted. Oscar Bull-Brown, instrument repairer, Wellington, for whom Mr. O'Leary appeared, was granted a sine dio adjournment.
John S. Harney, boot Topairor, vHataitai, who appealed for family reasons, was granted an adjournment till tho March sitting.
John Henry Wood, clerk, Khandallah, produced a certificate that he was over military age. He was granted exemption.
Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for Justin A., Pescint, market gardener, Lower Hutt, who appealed on the ground of undue hardship. brother, whoso property he managed as Well as working His own, had been ot the front for four years. Tho caso was adjourned until March.
Waiter Plntt, contractor, Northland, had his case adjourned until March.
