Apparently members of the House ot Representatives are waking np to tlio fact that educational facilities are not what thoy ought to be, and so the matter of education and the encouragement afforded to it by Iho Government is meeting with considerable criticism. : Last evening the member for Egmont .'ll r. Wilkinson) had a good deai to say m this respect. Many of tho buildings -.sect for schools he described as being absolutely unsuiled to the work; tho supply of teachers was inadequate, and in thrj district in which he lived no men teachers were, applying for vacancies. •' Tlib capitation pay for schools was not sufficient to enable them to. bo kept pro. perly clean. Classrooms were overcrowded, sanitary arrangements we.ro of the poorest description, and in somo cases shockingly inadequate, and in somo of tho schools there were far too many children in tho one room. Anotnor limit, that was frequently met with was tin. fact that in so many eases tho grounds upon wliich schools wore built were far too small. Mr. Wilkinson mentioned an instance bf a school having only one iters of ground attached to it, with 700 children attending it. They were so herded together that broken limbs were not infrequent owing to such cramped quarters for ploy. He hoped that sufficient money would be voted to educational purposes to remedy such glaring defects. Air. Buddo also had something to say in | regard to- education, and had members of tho Wellington Women Teachers' Association been present they would certainly have approved of the above remarks as embodying many of the grievances about which they have agitated.
