At tha Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. F. V. Fiwer, S.M., Frederick John WormaW was ed with attemptiuß to defraud_ TA illiam John Cuppies of the sum of dEIM by means of a false pretence, to wit, that he was • endeavouring to obtain the release of a certain younj? woman from a convent in Chnstchurch, nnd was remanded to appear in Christchurch on November 1. Cecil Charles M'Cullough, who was arrested in the city yesterday morning by Detective-Sergeant Eawle and Detec'tive Mason on a similar charge, appeared before the Court in the afternoon, and was also remanded to appear in Christchurch. on November 1. By Telegraph-Press Association. Christchurch, October 29. Arthur Patrick M'Guire and Janst Mary M'Guire, his wife, were each charged at tho Magistrate's. Court to-day, be,foro Mr.-S. E. M'Cartliy, S.M., with obtaining i£l9l 4s. froiro May, 1917, to August, 1918, from William John Cu.pp)e3 by false .pretencM. Tho male accused had. previously lieen twice remanded on this charge, originally from Dunedin, it being there alleged that ho had obtained tho money by representing it was being used to obtain the release of a Miss Hines from a convent. Detective M'llveney applied for a remand for a. week. Mr. W. J. Hunter, for the accused, stated that the womnn was in a delicate condition and asked for nominal bail. The chief detective; They might leave. I understand that M'Guire was endeavouring to leave the country whon lir, was arrested. The Magistrate: How can auyono leave the country .without a permit? Tho accused 'Wero remande<t for a week, bail being granted, tho female accused in her own recognisances, and M'Guire in two sureties of ,£SO each and Ms own surety of dfilOO.
