Last year the maehino registered ,£76,899 10s.; this year £82.056 10a. The chief ov'cnt of the day. the Champion' Plate, was won by Gloaming, who started a hot favourite. ' The A.J.C. Tho slow time in which tho race was run, 2min. 13 1-sbcc„ indicates tho heavy nature of the track. ,| The; principal handicap event fell to Bagdad, who won the 'Parliamentary Handicap at the , Wellington Winter Meeting. Glorify, who was almost the< outsider of tho field, ran second, whilst the favourite, ' Devotion, was outside a placerOnly one favourite .scored, and that was Gloaming. ; - Generally it was a day of fair dividends, and in the Juvenile Handicap, in a field, of twenty-two. tJio" nineteenth favourite, Mistian, squeezed home, ,;ind gave''a sensational return. Mistian is by V/inkie from Mistime, alld *is trained ■ at New-Plymouth by li. Barlow for Mr/A. Lib. As on the first day the public experienced difficulty in getting to the meeting. The. railway was patronised to-the full extent to which it would' accept passengcrß, 'and'then there were hundreds of the holiday crowd shut out. Those who were fortunate enough to get on. to the trains found them not overcrowded and amply ofiicered. In fact it is said that there w?re eight officers -on. tho 8.30 a.m. train, one of »ixteen vehicles. There was much jc3tiinjr and indiscriminate -"scrumming" in the queues ouUide the ticket-boxes, and several women fainted.
