The Mayor of Ivaitangata (Mr: T. S. Cairns), in an address of welcome fo three returned men last week, delivered a shot which found an echo in tho hearts of the majority of the crowd standing around the soldiers. TMerrinp; to tlie good results of the Copper trail, Mr. Cairns thanked his fellow-citizens who had generously responded to the appeal. "Bui"." lie continued, "we have some individuals here who won't go out to fight, nor will they contribute one penny piece to assist ia getting comforts for the soldiers." In opening tho proceedings the chairman *aid it was hard to imagine how the lower-paid officers 'of the service could manage to make ends meet at present. There was no doubt that they must suffer hardships. This had been recognised by the Arbitration Court in the awards made, and by tho Government in granting a bonus, but this was not sufficient in view of tho diminished purchasing power of tho pound. It could not be tmd that ihe branch was acting unreasonably if _ it approached the Government for relief, and urged the repeal of the legislation of last session which postponed the re"radiiif of the service. The following resolutions were carried unanimously by the meeting:-(l)' That ihe wnr bonus is quite inadequate to meet even a reasonable part of the decreased mirchasing power ot our salaries. (2) What we request the Government to grant during the present (session of Parliament is an increase of 25 per cunt, on the first *£200 of all salaries, with a minimum of -EoO to married men. Such increases to take effect from Anril 1, 1915. : (3) That this meetin" of the Wellington section deplores the action of tho Government in postponing the regradmg of. the service, and asks the Government to take steps to repeal such legislation during tho pro session of Parliament. As tho City Council authorities can for the present give the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board no guarantee of being able to meet the demands otthe board for milk, the question of securing' a dairy farm is being pursued. A meeting of the Farm Sub-Committee was held yesterday afternoon to further consider 'the irtatter. _ A[r W. Newton. Conciliation Commissioner, who has been in Wanganui in connexion with the bricklayers dispute, has returned to Wellington. A complete settlement was arrived at m the dispute, with tho exception of some small l»mts ill rcard to wages, which have been held over for further consideration. There is said to he now very little at issue between the parties. The timber industry in Southland lias never so active as at present says an Invercargill paper and inilleis art vm able to cope with the demand. Lai go orders have beea received from Austiaha for red'pine, birch and wluto pine, but, even supposing the production to bo cnual to requirements, the curtailment of shipping facilities would stand in the way of adequate exportation, so many efficient workmen have gone to the lront, or left to follow other occupations, that it is impossible to keep pace with the business.
A tolegram signed by a number of Botorwi residents was recently sent to the Hon. G. W. liussell, asking that the moiitUs of-some-of tho best and most accessible streams entering Luke Hotorua be reserved absolutely for ily-hshing. It was pointed out that dissatisfaction had arisen through the Department netting theso mouths, and thus spoiling tho sport of those paying for fishing licenses, and tending to keep away tourists from tho district thereabouts. The Minister has replied stating that although ro net-ting-had beon done in the lake last year it was generally admitted that it had in the past greatly improved tho trout of the lake. Tho .question of. continuing the netting was under consideration, bat in any ' operations carried out caro would be taken not to unduly interfere with the fishing by license-holders. In any case, if the netting was necessary, it would not be done till after tho New Year holidays.
