Cable Assn.-Reuter. THE NEW FRENCH OFFENSIVE , j / London, October 27. A. French communique states: "Supported by tanke, we began to-day a vigoroue drive between the Oise and the Serre, and hustled the enemy out of etrong defences. Wo captured several villages,, and took numerous prisoners. The Germans between Sissonne and Chateau Porcion repeatedly counter-attacked in great strength, but were everywhere repulsed. 'We nave taken 2300 prisoners in this region since yesterday. One division alone captured a hundred machineguns." A later communique states: "During the night the First Army redoubled its eiforts'on the front between the Oise and the Serre, and theieeniny, shaken by- fighting, gave way along the whole line, and had to withdraw to tho north, abandoning hie positions. Wo captured Mont d'Orijnu, Saint Benoit, Courjumell, and Cbevrieis-Monceau, and Also'numerous fortified points d'appui between these villages. On our right our units crossed the Peron, and advanced to the north-east. We-captured Hill 117, and a sugar factory ICOO yards east of Richecourt, and tho number of prisoners was further increased on the Serro front. The 10th Army, supporting the movement of the Ist Army, also made fresh gains. Wo crossed the Serro east of Assis, and penetrated the German trenches east of Sissonne. A violent German connter-attack in the region of Marquigny Farm was shattered by our fire. Wo took over 2450 prisoners, between Chateau Porcien on Friday and Saturday."—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.-Eeuter. The High Commissioner reports: London, October 28. 2 a.m. A French official report states: "The enemy wae closely pursued and continued his retreat between the Oise and the Serre on a front of more than 15 miles, our advance at certain points exceeding -five miles. We are approaching the joad to Guise. We captured Maries,'and also a considerable amount of material." THE WAR IN THE AIR ■ • . (Rec. October 28, 10.15 p.m.) London, October 28. Sir Douglas Haig's aviation report states: "Wβ dropped 8i tons of bombs on October 26 on important railway stations, with excellent results, destroying eight enemy machines. We drove down three outof control. Nine British machines are missing. Our night-flyers dropped three tons. All returned." The Press Bureau reports i "The Independent Air Force heavily attacked the Frescaty aerodrome on October 27. The bombs burst well on]the target. All our machines returned."—Aus.-N.Z.
