ROMANCE OF THE WAR. Colonel Godfrey. Jones, D.5.0., ivho began life as a hoy in (he mines of.the Ebbw Vnle Coal Company, has been nominated for promotion to brigadiergeneral. His rise in the Army is one of tho romances of the war. Ae a, lad ho attended a night school, and eventually became a miner. In due course lie secured his miniiig certificate, and was then appointed a foreman. In' the view of his superiors, ho did not at first show ability to command meu, and was sent back to' the ranks, but later lie was given another, trial as foreman, and soon proved his ability to occupy the position. Shortly nfter 'Hie outbreak of war he joined tho Cardiff "Pals'" Battalion of the South Wales Borderers. He was speedily promoted corporal and further advancement soon followed until he became sergeant-major, which rank lie held for one day only, as his commission was on the way.' His battalion went to Prance in -the autumn of 1915, and he was then transferred to the Border Regiment. A little later he went with, his regiment to Salonika, and it was on this front that he gained his D.S.O. and his promotion to lioutenant-colonel.
