Mr. H. Y. Braddon, Australian, Trade Commissioner to the United States, has been entertained by the St. George Society. Mr. C. Clive Bayley, British Consul, said that'' Australia's .action in appointing a Commissioner- to the .United States was a distinct move towards closer and more valuable relations, both diplomatic and, commercial.'
Mr. Braddon, in reply, said the question of the German islands in the' Pacific: was vital to' Australia and New Zealand. Australians would sleep • easier now that Mr. Balfour had declared that the. colonies- would not be returned to Germany. : Mr. braddon said that ho brought a message that rang from end.to end of Australia: that their answer to Germany must be "unconditional surren-der."—Aus.-N.Z. EPIDEMIC SUBSIDING IN 'CAPE TOWN.

Cape Town, October 24.' The position with regard to the influenza epidemic continues to improve. Towns are- rapidly resuming their normal state. : The death rate in lumberley was over-10 per cent, of the population.
• The. disease >is still virulent .in-the country districts and native areas. In some cases small communities in the native area were almosi wiped out.—Router. ■ ■ •
