Tho death occurred on Thursday afternoon, at his residence in Woodford Itoad,Auckland, of Captain Alexander l'arnuhar, for a great many years one ot the best-known shipmasters in (he northern part of New Zealand. Captain l'arquhar was born at. Peterhead, Scotland, and went to sea when he was a boy. Coming out to the colonics as a voting man he entered the New Zealand Government, service, and- was. in charge ot one of its steamers employed in transporting troops; : etc., during the Maori war. When the Thames goldficld was opened in 1867 he was appointed master of a steamer running to there from Auckland, 'and he remained .in. .that trade for nearly -M years, l-'or some years before he retired from the sea he was the commodore of the Northern Conipany'6 fleet. The deceased was a genial, large hearted' man, who made hosts of friends and was'very ■ popular. The late Mr. W. C. Bnddeii, who died suddenly on Thursday, was lor many years an indefutigible worker in I he \\elliiHon Y.M.C.A. He was a member of die Doal'd of Directors, chniniiiin of the Religious Work ' Committee, and leader of the Saturday night Bible Clnss and Study Circle of Hie latter institution,, 'and "lie will be greatly missed, especially by those who attend the Sunday afternoon men's meeting and strangers- tea. Mr. Rndden was n member of the New Zealand Executive of the T.M.CA., in connection with foreign missionary won, and'also was (he representative-in Wellington of several other missionary societies! "He spent seven years as a missionary in India. -Mr. Badden was also prominent in Presbyterian circles, being an office-bearer at St.-Johns Church, organist and treasurer of the bunclay School, and also organist to the Brooklyn Presbyterian Church. - Among those who arrived in Wellington from Melbourne- by the Vjeslralin veslerdav was- Flight-Lieutenant ■ Clarence" Umbers, of Dunediii, who is on ft few mouths' furlough. Cable advice received by his wife reports that Trooper E. L. Bryenta, eld-., est son of Mr. H. L. Brrentoii, Wellington South, was admitted to hospital on October 15, suffering with malarial fever.

No word has been received from' hini since, though members of (lie family heard from a comrade'of the soldier, who was with.him when he was wounded, that his arm was shattered, that he was in a bad way, 'and- past recovery.. The latest news, indicates that he was taken prisoner and is in hospital in' Germany recovering from his'-wounds. Needless-; to say .the - news ■ has caused great gratification..to the. members of the family, and the troopera ranny'friends, who are anxiously awaiting official confirmation..
