NOTES AND COMMENTS
fBY GLBNCOS. , -
At Trcntham yesterday matters were the roverso of pleasant for the windiug-up gallops, and several of the prominent horaea were not worked until late in the forenoon. Heavy rain fell at intervals and an icy cold wind blow from the south. Sasanof was to have gone ten furlongs, but owing to it b?ing necessary to cross some straw an alteration was made in tho plans, and he was galloped nine fur'longs. Taunaha picked him up over tho last six furlongs, but tho connection was faulty. From a time point of view the gallop was no good, and apparently Sasanof could not act in the. mud. Gloaming was sent a mile, but he also failed badly and rolled all over the course when finishing-. Croesus pulled very hard in getting to tho end of a half mile. Tho top-weight in tho Shorts Handicap is very well at tho present time. Meuelaus and Mascot covered a mile, and the Cup winner was in front when; the post was reached. P. Mason sprinted Elcus and Afterglow half a mile, and the former held the advantage at' the finish.Adjutant did not go well in a six furlongs' bout with Onslaught. i Devotion had an advantage of Depredation at the start of a seven furlongs' trial, and held the Auckland Cup winner all the way. The English-bred filly Pennon, worked half a mile pleasingly. Bonny Maid, who looks very well, and will be ridden by M'Flinn on Saturday, was much too good for Bonvillc over six furlongs. Several of the two-year-olds were sprinted on the course proper. H. Telford's Wellcsley Stakes candidate. Idleness, beat the imported .I'ulcia over half a mile. G. Jotic3 spurted Cashmere and the La Vegas filly, and the former finished in front. Lady Bp.ll, who is-a lazy worker, was ridden right out to beat Good Day over half a. mile. 'flic ChoUebore pair Royal Stag and Strathglaes were worked together and the Autunmus colt was easily the better of the pair. The Waiknlo owner E. Hannon arrives from Auckland to-dny. No decision will be come to as regards tho Riecarton trip until the conclusion of the Wellington Meeting, but it is not thought likely that Mangainahoe- 1 and the other members of his team will be sent south.' Nominations for the Ashhurst.Pohangina Racing Club's annual meeting close-to-morrow. The local telegraph ottlcu closes at 5 p.m. Amongst the visitors to Wellington at the present time Is Major W. 8. Glenn, formerly a well-known Wanganui owner. Major Glenn. has been "gassed," and is at present on two months' furlough. "Templar" in the "Sun" says: "Should everything go well with* Sherwood and Motclilight between now and New Zealand Trotting Cup day J. Bryce does not, intending starting Cathedral Chimes in the big event. Brycc has decided not to scratch his champion, as in the event of cither of the others going amiss ho would take his placei in the field. It is understood that the Oakhaiupton mentor has secured an interest in Sherwood, and this will enable him to drive the gelding in th« Gup, while A. Hendrick'son will holft the reins over Matchlight. There is nothing amiss with Cathedral Chimes, but liis mentor has cone .to the conclusion that both hie other pair could beat him ,at the handicaps." ' , The majority of tho late P. Jones's team at ElkTslie will most likely definitely find their way into .T. Thorpe's charge. That trainer is at present supervising the doings of the team." This two-year-old full-sister to Mullingar has been entrusted to W. Sharp, , which should compensate him for tho loss of Moneta. Shining Light's .juvenile relative, who did not, appear likely to stand a preparation after sprinting at the parade. • F. Tilley did not send the imported colt Baybovry to Masterton, and it is understood that the eon of Bayardo is to be operated upon. Mr W S. Deshaf's br. f. Piraeus, by Demosthenes—Formula, was omitted from the acceptances for the Great Northern Guineas. A Press Association message, from Sydney states that the patron of Stringer's sta'blo has bought Kilhope. Mr. J. M. Cameron has purchs6ed Mr. Grconwood'e gelding Molyneaux. Visitors to Trenthm races will be pleased to learn that Messrs. James Godber and Co.. Ltd., have again .been favoured with instructions to carry out the catering arrangements' for the Spring Meeting. Patrons can rest assured of every attention to their requirements.--Advt. -
