LAND AGENTS
MEETING OF ASSOCIATION
COMMISSION CHARGES
\ The annual meeting of the Land Agents ijncl Auctioneer , Association of Wellington was held last evening in the Accountants' Chambers, Johnston Street. Mr. A. A. Gellatly (president) was in tho chair.
Tho- chairman, in moving tho adoption of tho report, said that it was gratifying to the executive that their efforts had received the appreciation of members. Tho executive would like to have done more, but unTil the Land Agents Act was amended nothing much, could be done. Tho Government would not undertake such legislation during the war period. ]Jo stated that the Dominion Association w:vs growing in strength, for tbjere were affiliated associations in. most of the principal towns. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows :—President. Mr. a. A. Gollatly; vice-presidents, Messrs. L. H. B. Wilson and G. A-. Preece. The election of tho committee wns lyiojurned to Tuesday, November 5, at 5 p.m., after the.extraordinary meeting is hold. Mr. E. , . W. Hunt was re-elected auditor. The question' of charges to bo made by land agents, which is to bo discussed by the Conference of Chambers of Commerce on a remit from the Napier Chamber, was discussed, 'and members' were generally of opinion that it was a piece of imperticnence on the part of chambers of commerce to desire to fix the remuneration of land agents. Mr. S. Harcourt pointed out that the land agen'ts were licensed by the Government and were operating under a special Act of Parliament. It would 1» as reasonable for the chambers of commerce to attempt to fix the scale of fees of lawyers and doctors. The laud agents were tho best judges of what their remuneration should be for services rendered. It was pointed out that there was no land agents' association in Napier, and that might bo the reason way this remit oaine from Napier.
On the motion of Mr. S. Hareourt it was decided to forward to tho Chamber of Commerce through the Dominion Association a reply to the effect ''That this association has read with interest the remit from the Napier Chamber, and that the secretary be instructed to inform the secretary of the Associated Chambers of Commerce Conference that tho land agents have formed themselves into district associations, under the ceiv' lra.l authority of the Dominion Association, for tho purpose, inter alia, of fixing a uniform tariff of commissions and charges throughout the Dominion, but that this dbject cannot be attained forthwith owing to the varying _ classes of businesses and the local conditions in different centres. A number of associations have already come into line. This object can be obtained internally far better than from outside associations, and that realising this, the Dominioß Association is taking steps to put the matter in order."
