Trooper Bernard Guthrio Whishaw, reported as having died from malarial pneumonia at tie Abbassis Hospital, Cairo, was well-known throughout the Wairarapa as a representative footballer. Trooper "Hardy" Whishaw had served in various encounters with the Wellington Mounted Rifles, having been for three years on active service. An elder ■brother, Corporal Harry Whishaw, who left with the Main Body and was wounded at Gallopoli, fell whilst serving in France. .
