STORAGE OF CHEESE

- Mr. C. E. Daniell, the chairman of the Harbour Board, etated last evening.that the board had been approached to provide storage for cheese, whicli would be more difficult to ship than was the case last season. Mr. Darnell said that tho officers of the hoard immediately set to ■work to find out if it was not jJossible to insulate the Lambton Store No'. 1, -which the hoard was building. Inquiries were made in New Zealand andin Aus-. tralin, and it was found impossible to procure tha'reqnired 1, machinery, and. it was estimated that: the cost of insulat ing the store would be about. ,£15,000. The hoard was thus unable to do a'njthing- because of the difficulty of procuring material and insulation plant. Mi. J. G. Harkness said that the position in regard to cheeso was most serious. There were at present about 68,000 crates of cheese in storo, and while a quantity would he 'shipped durintr the next two months the new make of cheese would come in and there would still be practically the same quantity in store at the end of tho year. The present capacity of Z Stoi'e was about 105.000 crates, "although 110,000 crates have been taken in by tjockincr'un the alloy-waya. In January and, February thero would ho -more cheese cominsr forward than this .store could possibly hold, and the position then.'-would be-very, serious. In all probability ■ the cheese output would in the course of a day .or two become the property of the Imperial Government, and it would be their botinden duty to take - care- of ■■ the cheese. Jfr. Hnrkness was, however, unable to eusjest whnt farther ftnps th-i bonrd should rake in thn 'matter in view of the fact that insulation plant was not prneurnMp in the time availablo for providing storage.
