THE GERMAN MENACE

Sir,— Th'e, incongruous, note struck hy the correspondent signed "Colonial" in your "Letters to the Editor" column of .October 17 appears to me, with the peace controversy at white heat, both significant and sinister. "Colonial" protests against the Kaiser, who is the leadin' character in the film in question, being designated "The Beast of Berlin," and desire.-; that tho man directly responsible for this'horrible.-war, who condoned, if not personally commanded, tho wanton destruction of innocent lives of man and beast, the devastation of countries, the violation of young girls, tho sinking of hospital ships, the bombing of defenceless people in their- beds, and other awful atrocities too numerous to mention, should be judged with "moral fineness and self-restraint." Let justice ho tempered with ineri'y, certainly. But, just as n criminal lias his offences included in the indictment against him, en, should not one of the crimes for which the Kaiser is responsible be omitted from Hie Allies' counsel's brief when peace is declared and Germany stands at the bar of justice. There should be no "forget and forgive," no let "bygones lie bygones," but a strict adherence to international law with a full list of the Kaiser's crimes nlainly set forth before the tribunal. "Tho Beast of Berlin," forsooth! Why; the title is an insult to the boast of the forests who know no discourse of reason." I hnve no connection with "The Beast «f Berlin" film (although I coin piled some of the advertisements at Wellington), but I sincerely )>"- lieve that pictures of this typ<\ pamphlets such as T/ik'hnowslty's. and cartoons such n « I!^"!ii' I k' , rs's.should be fxhiHtfd and disseminated broadcast throughout all tlie Allied coiiiitrifs "Iraf'w? I'orxef" wh"n the Berlin bully is brought to book.—l am, etc., LEON LEOPOLD DUCHATEAU, Theatrical, Manager.
