\s a test of "average intelligence" an' American paper published a list of 100 words supplied by a professor of Stanford University, and asked its readers to define them without consulting a dictionary. Now, to give the definitions of a hundred words off-hand is not a simple matter. A headmaster of a school who threw the challenge to his 80 pupils certainly got some interesting, results. One boy got 90 per cent., and the rest from 80 down to 49 nor cent. Here are a few of the definitions of the words given:—Achromatic —a peculiar smell. Piscatorial—the Episcopal Church. Shagreen—to feel shy, to be embarrassed. Also bashfulness. Laity—slow, half awake. Chartor—to 'burn to a crisp ash. Milksop— a breakfast food. Also a rag-to wipe up milk. Guitar—a disease of tte head. Also a lump growing on tbo throat. Perfunctory—organs of the body. Sapient—having sap. Oclire— moiicy. Also si musical instrument. Juggler—a. vein.
