KARORI BOROUGH AFFAIRS
— ♦ The Mayor (Mr. B. G. H. Burn) presided over a meeting of the Karori Borough Council held last evening, and there .were present Councillors T. \V. Lewer, J. \V. Henderson,, R, T. Pell, W. G. Bradnock, and W. Skegg. The engineer in his report stated that he was at a disadvantage owing to there being no by-laws relating to salutary matters, and more particularly with regard- to the erection by householders of septic sewage tanks. There were how twelve of these tanks in the borough, and, in,the.absence,of a drainage scheme the number of these tanks was certain to increase. The engineer was of opinion that a house draining into a private septic tank required more safeguarding than a house connected to a sewage system, where the machinery for controlling it is in full .working order. He suggested that householders desiring to build tanks should be required to submit'plans for approval. At present the engineer had no power to prevent the faulty con- , struclion«of these tanks, and some of those already erected were alleged to be of faulty construction.' ' When a tank became a nuisance the engineer had to invoke the services of the Health Department to "have its use discontinued. ' Mr. F. Norris, honorary organiser, National Service League, wrote asking the . council's co-operation in.advocating the. ' establishment of memorial workshops, . after'the stylo of the' Lord Roberts • ■ Workshops in England, to help the dis- ! abled sailors and soldiers of the Doniin- ' ion. The letter was received.
