NOTES AND COMMENTS

ißf oirareos.''-

At Trentham yesterday a tot of galloping was riouo by the visiting horses. (jloamiug and Basanof ran seven fur-longs-in lmin. 333 cc, and to the surprise of all the Melbourne Cup winner appeared to. be going the better of the pair. Mascot easily held Devotion at the end of seven furlongs, run in lmin. 33Jsec. Pennon, with a big pull in tho weights, wau too good for Parisian Diamond over flvo furlongs.'-which took lmin. sJsec. Oro'esus alone ran half a mile in 52sec, which was the best gallop of the morn-Uo-Pcep was many lengths ahead of ; Cotillion over h>e? lurlones, which was encompassed in lmin. sJsec. Mill-o-Gowne had no difficulty in beating Nystad over a similar distance. The latter was in one of his sour moods, and would not gallop. ... Bonny Maid, who looks very well, bent Eisingham over seven furlongs in lmin. 32Jsec. The G.N. Oaks winner is e»;usre<i in the Shorts Handicap, and on this K.ailop would apnear to have a big chance. Thero is a disposition to make tuiiiooii ft short-priced order in the Wellington Handicap, but so far he is not reported at Trentha.-n,' nor is there any woru of tho timo of his arrival. It should, be noted that the-three-year-old is engaged in the Auckland Guineas, and his owner may decide not to give him a hard race at Trentham. Some, of the' New Zealand sportsmen who returned from Sydney by this week s boat hold the view that Finmark was unlucky to be beaten in the A..T.0. Derby. They declare that the chestnut colt got a very bad passage early in the race, and again at a critical 'juncture Outlook, who was fading in his rider's hands, rolled right over on the son of Finland. There ia a chance that Gloaming and Mr. Lowry's colt may meet again in the Great Northern Derby at Ellerslie. The entries for the hurdle events at the coming C.J.C. Meeting are not very Btrong numerically. The only North Island entrants are Gladful, who is an unlikely runner, and Vacuum, who scored at Masterton on the second day.

Very big fields are engaged in several of the events at the coming Trentham Meeting, and unless numerous scratchings are made before the publication of the correct card it will be necessary, to bracket several of the horses. Owners would be studying the convenience of the public if. in the event of their intending not to start .their horseß. they would make known their intentions early. -,After racing unsuccessfully at the Bandwick Meeting, Julhopo, was sold for 400 guineas. As a yearling he was sold for 1000 guineas, and his' solitary success, so far, was in a Maiden Plato at Woodville. Returned visitors from Sydney state that J. O'Shea may not ride Mr. T. H. Lowry's horses at the Melbourne Cup Meeting. Through an oversight, Cyrcsian has been left in the C.J.O. Derby, uut there Is little chance of him seeing the post. A Dunediu paper says:—"Mr. Greenwood, states that Biplane is in no sense broken down. Ho fell lame, but the "vet," found the cause in inflammation of one of. the long muscles near the round bdno of' the hin. The treatment indicated is long rest and plenty of grass, and when Biplane has had that we may hope to see him racing again, possibly by the autumn. A good oD.it was received for the colt after the sale, but with every chance of his racing again Mr. Greenwood was not. disposed to accept it."
