VACCINE FOR INFLUENZA

INTERESTING CONTROVERSY AT CAPE TOWN.

(Rec. October 22, 7.55 p.m.) Capo Town, October 21. The Director of the South African Institute of Medical Research, in a report on the. use of vaccine prophylaxis in connection with influenza, says it would not be justifiable in tho present state of knowledge to claim that any bacterial vnccino would confer • any ■ protection against epidemic influenza. It is possible that doses of comprehensive "Lister's Eight Group" (tho name by which the late Lord Lister's method of administering vaccine is known to medical science) might be useful in preventing pneumonia complications. On the other hand, the opinion of ths Government Bacteriologist and practitioners generally is that vaccines modify an attack, lessen tho incidence nnd severity of pneumonic complications, and reduce mortality. The Director of Medical Services in the Defence Forces states that ho Tins had under close observation many thousands of cases. Not one who underwent a second inoculation contracted the disease, and there was only one case where the patient who had been once inoculated had died of pneumonia. It was the emphatic opinion of all the military doctore that the value of vaccine was in-controvertible—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. STRICKEN VESSEL ARRIVES AT BROOME. Melbourno, October 22.
