INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION

A'meeting of the members of the -Wellington Industrial Association was held last evening. Mr. IT. Mainland 'presided, and there' was a small muster of members. '~,, , Mr. C. J. Ward was appointed to re; present the association on the Workers' Educational Institute. Mr. I'. AV. Vosseler was appointed a member of the Standing Committee. Jlr. Gray Young, architect, who won the Industrial Association's scholarship, some time ago, was elected a member of the association.. The Minister ot Internal Affairs (Hon. G. W. Russell) wrote stating that he had recently given the question of the industries of Sew Zealand careful consideration,'and a month or two ago delivered an address in Auckland on the' subject at the request of the Northern Manufacturers and Industrial Association of Auckland, and that he intended addressing the Manufacturers and Industrial Association of ChristchuHi in a few weeks' time.' He agreed with the association's proposal that the portfolio, of. Industries should remain a live one, and he would be glad to assist, any movement having for its object the increase of the industries of New Zealand, in order'to provide employment for our people and retain a large amount of money which is now sent from New Zealand annually to foreign countries which could and should be retained here ;f our industrial system were properly developed. Mr. T. BalHnger took exception to the statement alleged to have been made by the Mayor as to the value of the .Technical School land and buildings, which, the Mayor said were worth i!l!O00, This, Mr, Balliiujer said, was preposterous. Tlio land when given for technical education was valued at ,£IO,OOO, and the 'building cost about XJOOOj He thought that tho cE15,000 proposed to be given by the City Council was insufficient under the circumstances, and he thought Hint the council should give „522,000. He suggested that the Technical Education Board [ should be urged to approach the council 'for the larger grant. lie submitted'that as a motion, which was duly seconded and carried.
