POULTRY NOTES
(By "Chanticleer.") Seoond-Year tests, At tho New Zealand Utility Poultry Club's meeting last Tuesday evening tho president brought forward a motion to coaso the aecond-yoar pen teßtine in the eggrlaying competition. The subject was hurriedly introduced, and the discussion hastily ended, with tho result that the motion ivae loet by two votes. It Jβ rather sicniflcant that tho Ha-vkeebury test, tho oldest egff-laying competition in the world, lan decided to abandon the second-year tests. They havo conducted them for years and extracted all tho information they are likely to convey. It seems absurd to keep a competitor's bird for a eecond year. that has already demonstrated itn ability to lay. It prevents hie doing business that is his just reward. An Australian breeder has booked over £100 vortli of orders from one of tho world's record-breakers. It is a veritable waste that eggs from such proved layers should not be ueed for reproduction. If competitors avoto have their birde retained and prevented f:om doine the business which is their just reward Ihc competition will certainly lose a good deal of suport. . . Tho Hawfcesbtiry Test. Tho conditions coverniwr the next layins competition at Hnwkesbury Colleeto shortly to be issued include provision for ti'e acceptance of ten entries of "standard" birds—that is, birds belonging to breeders who have won a first, feeond, or third nriz.e in onen classes at on unproved exhibition durins tho past three years. Thp birde tntpred, too, will have to be of fltardard ouality. A general increase in priws hai> been d"oidod upon, and soDarnto aunlity prizes allotted for the open '■ompetition, and the standard section those for the fonnrr beii"? ■") <ind ■""■ 10s. The prizen for standard birds will, rot be ■."warded, .to a km'nr les? -than a. tbnnean , ' epes. The p»"ond vear j"»"tinn will be discontinued. The entrance fee ie to bo r'ised to ?ss. in order to cc-er froteV. for the return of birds. _ The fiir."nitt'>e ' s reserving the Heht to in?n""t thu stock of any unulicint for i> pen with ;. .'iei- tn di>ti>rrnn" w v "t)ier the ouali*r and nharae'er of the birds warrant- the nlhtiacst o* pens. Nn'M fir the Hovloc. Ducklings aro very susceptible to heat. For this reason the yard in which they are kept mmt have plenty of shade. If natural shelter is not available, artificial shade-some bags strotched on a. framewill do—must be provided. Another thins to remember is that the water vessel must be filled overnight so that the ducklings can have it first thing in the mormngthis is important. And the water should he deep enough for them to dip in their beaks right down to the eyes. By uiis means tho head and eyes are kept clean— another important Him. In fixing perches it is wise not to let 'them touch the walla of the house, vermin may bo kept down much more effectively if this simple precaution is taken. Don't forget that ground upon which fowls havo been running for a long timo hecomeß stale and sick, just the same as everything else that is worked too hard. The cure is the same-i snell from work. Chickens that are Kept too long on wooden .loors are very apt to develop cramp, wliich often means twisted toeseasier to prevent than cure. Let them run on the ground, and \vhilo,they are in the brooder the floor should be covered with a thicker layer of sand. ■ Plenty oil green food will tend to prevent broodinesc- by iU action in the way of scouring and' removing internal fat. If vou can't set green stuff you can procure Ensom salts, which will have the same effect-a; packet to 20 grown birds dissolved and added to the maeh once a, week. # It is ea-id that if an old bird which is Intended for the table is given a tableflrnonfnl of vinegar the night before it is killed, the flesh will be made more tender. I haven't. tried the idea myself.
