BRICKLAYERS' WAGES
OFFEE EQUAL TO 2s. AN HOUR.'
Recently the Wellington bricklayers niado a demand, for an increase in wages of from Is. 7*d. (present rate) to 2s. per hour. After a discussion in the Conciliation Council the employers made an offer to tho men's representatives, which, the latter agreed to refer back to the executive of the union. _ It is understood that this .offer is worth practically 2s. an hour to tho union at present, that tho flat rate is not raised to that amount, and that therefore there may be a reversion to less than 2s. after the war. The oiler is under consideration. Whatever tho wage agreed on, it is unlikely that it will affect the pay oi Rood men in tho trade- in Wellington. Thews is not by any means a surplus of bricklayers, and, in some cases at least, high rates are being paid.
