MAORI CLAIM TO LAKES

Tho - hea'riuß or the claim of the Arawa tribe for tho "ownership of the lakes was continued-at tho Native Land Court to-daj'; Mr. Earl, for the claimants, characterised the Crown's contention that the Natives never owned tho lakes as outrageous. lie referred 'lengthily to the Government purchase of the; Wairarapa Lake,- .and quoted Messrs. Brvco and Shechau us admitting that the. Natives owned the bed of the lake by customary right. Ho quoted Land Court minutes showing that the Kotorua lakes were included in the claims and a judjiment proving that the Maoris had property rights therein. Ho referred to English authorities, 'especially the Loush Ilea east, contendiiia that the law recognised the riaht of property in lakes. The Court adiourned to Monday, when Mr. Earl will call evidence.
