AN EXTRAORDINARY CASE.

Duneiiin, October 18. At the Police Court to-day Arthur Patrick M'Guire was charged that between May, 1917, and August, 1918, at Christchurch, he obtained from William John Cnpples £'194 l.y means of false pretences—namely, that he was endeavouring to obtain the lelease or a Miss Lines, from a convent. UnetDotective Bishop said the facts, as related by complainant, were extraordinary. Ho lived at Ohnstchurch, and while working at the convent became acquainted with a young- woman there, arid conceived the desire of obtaining her release. He got to know accused, and mentioned the matter to him": Accused told him that ho could obtain the girl's release if.the money were put up, and in order to do so said he would "et two detectives from Wellington. These alleged detectives were duly introduced to complainant, and from time to time bums of money were obtained from him. Accused is to appear at Tuesday.
