MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.
: The Wellington City Council met last evening. . The Mayor presided, and there were present also Councillors J. E. Fitzgerald, W. T. Hildreth, R, A. Wright, J. Castle, W. J. Thompson, C. 13. Norwood, J. 0. SJiorland, M. i\ Luckie, L. M'Kenzic, A. Veitch, W. H. Bennett, J. Oodber, W. H..P. Barber, and G. Frost.
Permission lias been granted the Kolburn and Karori Tramway Company to throw a small triangular strip oWand into the private way known as Tramway Avenue. A further application for a license to drive a taxi-cab, from a man whose license was refused on account of unfavourable police reports, was not granted.
Permits to drive motor vehicles were granted to three applicants, each 18 years of age, but a permit was refused to an applicant 16 years of age. Permission was granted tho Defence Department to erect a target shed, 8 feet by 6 feet, on the section of Town Belt, Duppa Street, used by them as a rifle range, subject to such conditions as may be considered neceßsary, the Department to be allowed to remove the shod.at.anv timo the use of the range should be discontinued.
Letters of thanks are to bo forwarded to the donors of the following gifts to the Zoo:—Two black opossums, Tourist Department; one ganet, Mr. Orange, Upland Road; ono tortoise, Mrs. Patten, 2-5 Reuben Avenue; and rose trees, Councillor M'Kenzie.
An application of the Deputy Public Trustee for permission to erect an indicating signboard on a telegraph post at the corner of Ballance Street and Lambton Quay was refused/ The Outlying Districts Committee reported "that tlioy have received a request from tho Melrose Electors' Association that the council take over a 4foot strip of land between Sutherland Road and Buckingham Street as a drainage reserve, and means of access for pedestrians from Sutherland Road to Queen's Drive, via ' Buckingham Street. The committee have to recommend that the council request the association to ascertain what contributions the owners in the vicinity are prepared to make towards the construction of the necessary steps in the drainage way in the event of the council agreeing to take over the strip, and spend >the renuired money in forming the steps. The committee have also to recommend that the association be informed that it must be distinctly understood that although the council can take the strip of land over as a drainage resorvo and spend money on its maintenance as such, it is questionable whether the council have nnw'r to spend money at all in providing tho steps in the reserve."
