■V social gathering of a distinctly successful order eventuated in Featherston on Tuesday night, when a large assemblage of children and their parents were the guests of tho Mayor (Mr. J. W. Card) and Mayoress (Miss Card) at a" ball. At the conclusion of the evening Mr. C. M. Blake, master of the Cross Creek School, recorded a\>preciation as to tho hospitality extended by the host and hostess, his remarks being cordially endorsed. A great-grandson of Nwwleon was killed recently in action not far from Reims, where he was at the head of a machine-gun section. His name was Daniel Napoleon Mcsnard, and he was tho son of a lady whose maiden name was Leon, who was the daughter of Count Leon, a natural son of the Emperor. The dead soldier bore himself bravely in tho defence, of Reims, and was mentioned in dispatches.
