Mackay the second, and E. S. Taylor (who came first last year) the third prize. It will also be noted .that Davies scored "the possiblo," •which' is a recorcl for the I'etherick contest. Giles (the well-known congress player, wiio is at.present doing ambulance, ivbrk in tho Balkan area); 190G, R. J:' Barnes; 1907, H. Jesaup (now- a prominent WnngaAui chessist); 1908, R. J. Barnes; 1909, W, E. Mason'; 1910, R'. J. Barnes; 1911J A. Gyles (father of tho'l9os winner); 1912, B: J. Barnes; 1913, W. Cowper Hill (who was killed in France in September, 1916); 1914, -W. C. White (Petone); 1915, no contest; 1916, W. O. White (Petone);. 1917,. E. S. Taylor; and 1918, A. W. O. Davios. Mr. Barnes, tho club champion, can show five wins,' and those ..were, all gained'in-the "even" numbered years. By his 1.903 win Mr. Bnrneis won the Petherick No. 1 trophy (a handsome shield) outright.. The No. 2.tropjiy (a silver castle sUrmouhte'd by a silver knight)' cannot be won outris;ht. The only condition imposed by the late Mr, .13. W.. Petherick (for many years tho club's president, and a vory liberal supporter or the game) was that the .annual' contest for this trophy should be a handicap tourney.. , Slower progress th'aii usual was mado. last week in tho club's current championship tourney owing to the pre* '.valence of influenza... The play was as follows -.—Ward drew with James,' Kelling drew with Davies, Mason won from "Still,'and S. Gyles won from.W. Mackay. Clark, v. James is incomplete, the latter, holding the advantage! Mason has now completed his fixtures, with the good tally of 14 wins and one- loss. Davies,. on- the other hand, has scored 12 wins and two. draws. Ho will consequently requiro to' win his game against Barries if ho is to play,off with Mason, for tho , .club championship.
