N.Z. ACADEMY OF FINE ART

ANNUAL EXHIBITION,

It is very interesting to look back to the year 1882, when the Academy of Fine Arts was founded, to get an idea of its expansion and its influence in the art world of New Zealand. In 1883 the academy held its first exhibition. This was opened at the Colonial (now Dominion) Museum with a collection of 94 works, mainly local productions. Since 1833 many things in the art world have happened, and to-day the academy is holding its thirtieth annual exhibition with ;t collection of nearly 400 works on view, including a. large number of drawings and artcrnfts work from art students in all parts of the Dominion. In the catalogue issued in 1883 tho secretary, Mr. Noel Barrand, stated: "The council trust that the exhibition may servo as a starting point from which members will steadily improve their work for future exhibitions." Were Mr. Barrand to step into the Art Gallery to-day ono ran well imagine with wliat pride he would gaze upon the realisation of the hopes of the academy's founders. Today tlio Academy of Fine Arts stands far in advance of previous with ii steadily increasing number of friends, larger aiid more accomplished works on its°walls, and with ever-widening out* look it takes high rank amongst the lending educational institutions of New Zealand. This evening, at 9 o'clock, Mr. Johannes C. Andersen, the newly* appointed librarian to the Turnbuil Li-, brary, will give a. fifteen minutes' talk on "The Relation of Painting to Poetry." The Art Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., and from 7 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. Tickets in the art union, to be drawn at tho close of tho exhibition, nnd illustrated catalogues, (vre on sale nt the entrance.
