Major P. G. Massey, youngest son of the Prime Minister, returned to New Zealand by tho Niagara. Major Massey has been invalided home.—Press Assn.

A Press Association telegram from Gore states that Mr. J. D. Cairns, editor, of the "Ensign" for the past ten' 1 years, died unexpectedly yesterday morning from pleurisy supervening on an attack of influenza. Tho death occurred last evening of Dr. Thomas E. Cahill, of Wellington Terrace. Dr. Cahill was operated oil about four weeks ago for a throat affection. -The operation was successful, a\id for a time the patient made satisfactory progress, but a change set h> later, and he gradually lost ground and died at 8.45 last night. The late Dr. Cahill was born in Dublin and was educated at Clongoos Wood College and Queen's University. After taking his medical degree he practised in Ireland for a short time, but at the-age of 25 lie emigrated to New Zealand, arriving here in 1884, and commencing practico in Wellington. The late Dr, Cahill was an hon. surgeon at Wellington Hospital, and was also at one timo Consul for America. He was not married.

The Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), who has been suffering from influenza, expects to be able to resume his duties tins week.

Flight-Major Keith L. Caldivell, ° f Auckland, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He is the only soil of Mr. D. 11. Caldwell, a mem-, ber of tho firm of Macky, Logan, Caldwell. Limited, and siuce lie has been attached to the Royal Flying Corps he Ims had a brilliant.onJ-eer, having met. with' very great success in this difficult branch o'f the service. Up to last March it wns reported that .ho had personally destroyed five enemy machines on the Western front, and had been in over fifty aerial battles. He had displayed unusual skill and eioat bravery, and last year was awarded'the Military Cross- for, conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On one occasion he led a patrol, of five machines against 12 hostile aircraft, all of which were driven down out of control. Major Caldwell <vas formerly on the staff of tho Auckland branch ol the Bank- of Now Zealand. Ho is at present commanding a squadron in Franco.

Cawtain J. D. Hewett, of tho lloyal Air Force, has been awarded the French Croix de Guerre with Palm. Captain Hewott, who is a son of Mr. Basil Hewett, cable censor at Auckland, is 26 years of age.. After leaving the Wangauui Collegiate School he uaa apprenticed to the firm of Holland and Gillott, engineers, of Auckland. He left for England in November, 1915, and ultimately joined the Royal Air Force.

After, an illness extending over, six mouths, the death occurred on Friday evening, at his residence, 281 Adelaide Roiid, of Mr. Henry G. Price. 'Hie late Mr. Price was born at Duckworth, \ ietoria, on April 20, 1857. He was a son of the late Mr. Matthew Price, Warden and Magistrate on the West Coast ot the South Island in the oarly days. He was a (surveyor by profession, ami an old officer of the Lands and Survey Department, having retired on superannuation in June, 1917, after 43 years service. During his official career ho parried on extensive surveys in Westlaud. Hawke's Bay, and Poverty Hay, and filled the following responsible positions: Land Transfer Draughtsman, Wellington; Chief Draughtsman, Napier and Ohristchurch; and Commissioner of Grown Lands and Chief Surveyor, Blenheim. Since his retirement from the service he has resided in Wellington. Ho is survived by a widow and live daughters. A slight improvement is reported m the condition of Dr. J, Allan ThornFon, Director of the Dominion Museum, who was taken ill yesterday week. He is now in the Brougham Street Hospital. Mr J. S. .Council; who was postmaster at Adelaide Road for about five years, has received an appointment in the District Telegraph Engineer s office, G.P.0., Wellington. : , The Defence Department advises that 6/1915 Private Henry M'Kmae, a ieturned undischarged soldier, died at the Christcliurch Hospital on October IU. His next-of-kin is his mother, Mrs. M. W. Latham, 34 Wilmer Street, Christchurch. . - Captain W. Glenn. M.C., R.A.F., one of the All Black football team, liae been gazetted major. Some time ago he was gassed, and has returned to New Zealand on six months leave, in order to regain his health. Owing to advancing age, tho Rev. Walter Harris, who has for a number, of years acted as supply in connection with the Addington Methodist Church Circuit, will retire at the close of tho present connexional year. Constable T. P. Fahey, Who has hc-en stationed in Wellington ■ since October, 1915, has been transferred to New Plymouth, and mil leave to-day to take up his new duties. Lieutenant Wilfrid N. Wood, of pier, who served through. tho Gallipoli '''campaign, is now in Northern Russia with a British regiment.
