Miss Cameron (Greytown) is the guest of Mrs. Allen Cameron (Castlepoint). Mrs. Eric Riddiford, who lias been spending a week in town as the guest of Mrs. Miles (Hobson Street), has returned to Orongo Orongo. Mrs. Eric Hutchison, who has recently returned from England, has gone to Christohurch. Mrs. Cockburn Hood (Glendonald, Wairarapa) is, staying at Miss Malcolm's (The Terrace). Mrs. Frank Nelson (Paliiatua) is stalying with her sister (Mrs. H. s Gore). Miss Rita Hampton (Island Bay) and' Miss Evelyn Drummond (Greytown) are stayiug with Mrs. Hosking in Masterton. Miss Le Cren and Miss Parkes (Dunudin) are staying at Kenilworth. A very enjoyable evening was given by friends at the residence otf Mr. John Holmes, Ngaio, to welcome Sir.geant A. J. Holloway, Fifth Reintorco ments, who returned on Wednesday. The table decorations were red, white, and blue, with the Stars and S.tripos of our Amerioan Ally in a prominent position. All present expressed theiv pleasure at their guest's safe return. The monthly meeting of the St. John Ambulance Brigade and Red Cross Society held at the Star Boating Club on Thursday afternoon, was well attended. Correspondence dealt with included a letter from Mr. L. 0. H. Tripp, Consular agent for Italy ,_ thanking the brigade for assistance given at the Italian Market. The depot workers, in conjunction with the sports bodies, conducted. the prqduco stall, at which over £70 was taken. .It was regretted that the workers could not undertake to work a district for the flag drive, various causes mitigating against it. Voluntary workers' badges wore awarded to Mesdames Green, North, and Gardiner. Hostesses at the Soldiers' Club for the coming week are as follow:—Sunday, Mrs. W. Nathan,; Monday, Mrs. D. J. Nathan and Mrs. M. Reid; Tuesday, Busy Bees; Wednesday, Hutt Ladies' Patriotic Guild; Thursday, Mrs. Fordham and Mrs. Brice; Friday, House Committee; Saturday, St. John's Women Association. ; Y.W.C.A. Motes. Miss Clark will be responsible for providing the entertainment at tho social to be held at the Y.W.C.A. to night for meinbors and for foldiers. The Y.M.C.A. orchestra will bo present to take part in the programme. There were 160 at tlie sooial last Satur- j day night, and many of tho girls camo in fancy costume. The grand march, which opened the proceedings, presented a very bright spectacle.) Mr. ana Mrs. Matthews camo from Ashburton, and they are also well known in Wanganui. A Wednesday night, dressmaking class' will commence at the Y.W.C.A. next week. Mrs. Hislop will bo the teacher at this class, as, well as at the Tuesday night class. Tho hours mil be from' 7 to 9.30. Tho board of directors of the Young Women's Christian Association met on Thursday afternoon, when Mrs. Robert Pearson presided, and recommendations wsro received \from the executive 1 and hostel committees submitting plans for alterations ..and 'additions to be made in one of the buildings at present occupiea as a hostel. The plans were approved by tho board, and when tho building operations are completed there will De accommodation provided for at least forty moro girls. The hostel to which the additions t-ro to be made immediately is situated in Brougham Street. As no. oher building could ho found suitable for the purpose, the Y.W.C.A. decided to purchase the property. 115. Brougham Street, and to build additions to it in order to help to meet this _ need which is so much felt in the city today. A recommendation was also "brought forward by Mrs. Adams (chairwoman 'of one of the standing committeosof the association) to the effect that earnest consideration should be given to the question of sullying a women's lunch room with res(i rooms attached, in the centre of the city. Morning Tea at tho Art Gallery. There was a very large attendance at the Art Gallery yesterday morning, and Mrs. Gore, wife of the president, provided the tea. There were quite a number of men, artists and their friends, as well a 6 many ladies present. It must be very gratifying for the committee to feel that such an interest in art is being displayed by 'the public. Over 70 new members have recently joined the society. Those present were: —Mrs. G. Coin Tea in Sydney Street Schoolroom, A very successful coin tea was held by the ladies of St. Paul's parish yesterday afternoon in the Sydney Street Sohoolroom, and there was a very good attendance, every one contributing to the funds in gifts or money. Mrs. Allen Johnson received the guests, but the vicar was suffering from an attack of influenza, and therefore unfortunately unable to be present. Mrs. Knowles and Mrs. Badham took charge of tho gifts and coins, the Misses Price and Garrell were in charge of tho flowers and pot plants. The tea, which was daintly set out in tho supper room, was served by Mesdanjes von 'Dadelszen and Lee, and Miss Morton. Amongst those who were present were: Mesdames Tripe, Medley, .Stowe, Hacon, M'Loan, Mitford, G. Tripe, J. Brandon, Guy Powlos, Lichfield, H. Crawford, T. Aylomor, Tally, Rouse, Martin, and Bett; and tho Misses A. Groenwopd, S. Brandon, Aswin. (2), Morton (2), Modloy,' Stowe, Barron, Seaton, Turnbull. Tho guessing competition was won by the Misses Haugliton (1), and Stowe (2). At the close of tho afternoon Mrs. Knowles was able to announce tho vory satisfactory nows that over £20 had been raised during the afternoon. Wellington Red Cross Shop. Yesterday Mrs. M'Mauaway handed in over £bG for the lied Cross, proceeds from her day at the shop. She is to be congratulated on raising such an excellent sum, as tho undertaking was entirely an organisation of her own. She had collected sufficient provisions for a produce, cako, sweets;" and fancy-work stalls, with tho v result that all we.ro excellent. Mrs. ■ Rose, Mrs,. M'Man,f.way's sister, was in charge of the home-made calces and produce, . and Miss M'Mauaway sold delioious sweets. The neodlowork was very beautiful, and found a ready sale. Very many visitors came to tho shop, and beforo the end of the day everything was sold. Mrs. M'Mauaway desires to thank all who so kindly sent her gifts and took so great an interest in her work. To tho many friends who came to buy she wishes to express her gratitude. As the flag drivo_ is to be pushed with extra vigour during the next ten days, there' will be no salo of produce at the shop. Flowers may be purchased as usual on Tuosdays and Fridays. Flags may be bought at tho shop, and it is earnestly asked that those persons _who so kindly come to buy will continue their help by the purchase of lied Cross flags for window decoration. Every penny goes to tho-lied Cross Fund. The joyful war news of the last few days must bear fruit in the help. for the Red Cross, and should stimulate one and all or us to go on doing our very uttermost to alleviate the sufferings of those to whom we owe so much. Sailors' Friend Society. Mrs. J. W. Varo's 1 concert at the Sailors' Friend Society on Thursday was highly successful. Those who help ed werd Mesdames Mueller aud Vare and Misses Barry, Troupe, Edwina Vare, V. Mueller, Troon, and Rickard,' and .Mr. Thompson. Mrs. Vare was at the piano. An appeal was made by the inissioner (Mr. J. Moore) for reading matter for the men for.use at sea. Interest and entertainment were sustained by the competitions, prizes for which came from Island Bay. _ Supper and cheers closed a happy evening.

At the Y.M.C.A. Assembly Hall, Willis Street, meetings of great public interest .are to be addressed by Mr.. M. W. P. Lascelles, it* Y.M.C.A. commissioner, who Jias recently returned from a visit to France, England, Egypt, and India, and while travelling through t]ie Mediterranean .the transport he was on was torpedoed. On Sunday afternoon he will speak at 4 o'clock to-men only on "Some of the things our boys are up against," and on Tuesday at 7.45 p.m. ho will deliver a lantern lecture to men and. womon on "A recent trip through India." Mr. Lascelles was born in India, has travelled the country extensively, and can speak from first-hand knowledge of its great problems and possibilities. The Karori Rifle Club will open its shooting season this afternoon with a teams' match between the president's and deputy-president's teams. The teams, which will be selected- on' the range, will fire the match at ranges of 200 and 300 yards, ten shots at each range.
