HANDS-ROUND-THE-PACIFIC

PAN-PACIFIC CONVENTION PROPOSED. Hawaii is an American _ possession. From its position approximately in tho centre of the Pacific radiate lines of trade to all points of the compass. It is therefore not surprising to learn or a Pan-Pacific movement emanating from Honolulu. Advice of such a proposal has been received by the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) from Mr. A. N. Ford, secretary of the Pan-Pacific Union. The letter, which explains itself, reads as follows;— "Dear Sir,—l am sending you some Hands-Eoiihd-the-Pacific Movement Itcrature, and will welcome your organisation in the Pan-Pacific Union, ct which your Sir Joseph "Ward was an early friend, and your Prune Minister, Mr.'Massey, is an honorary president. We believe'that to make a Monroe doctrine for the Pacific effective it must have the support of all Pacific Governments. We'feel that it is best to have the friendship of Japan and China, our Allies. Japan has ever kept ter gentleman's agreement with the- United States, and as she does not desire white domination of Japan she will agree that other lands are not to hare yellow domination. We can, and must, on the Pacific arrive at mutual understandings, and it is better for us to work together for the greater commerce that must como to the Pacific rather than to work against each other, for what will enrich ono helps all to prosperity. Better to know what the other side'is doing than to only suspect. Jf we can work together suspicion may be set aside in time and we may begin to understand each other and work for the good of the whole Pacific. "Here in Hawaii, where boys ot every race in the Pacific grow up together in the schools, there is no rate prejudice, because we know and understand one another. Neither is tfiere intermarriage of the races, for eacli race is proud of its own. This is an experiment station), and we are trying the plan of all Pacific races working together for a greater Hawaii arid tho education here of men of all lacihc races to go back to their own people and bring about better understanding. "When you are ready for such a meeting we hope to call a Pan-Pacific Convention hera at the crossroads ot the ocean, and I am sure that every country about tho Pacific will loyally support a Monroe doctrine, and that once we begin to work together for the Pacific wo will forget many minor differences and glory in the prosperity that must come to all." , According to the "literature which camo to hand with' the letter a lanPacific week" was to have commenced in Honolulu on September 16, when a preliminary conference was to be hew to discuss the movement which the promoters hope will, in the fullness o time, extend to the farthest corners of the ocean that laps, our shores Probably Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph \\m ma'v have more definite ideas on tho Honolulu. proposal generalised upon m the above letter. • ',
