The Hon. Arthur Myers, Minister of Customs, announces the following figures of the Customs duty collected in New Zealand during tlfe six months ended September 30, 1018, as compared with the corresponding period of 1917: —

v Customs Duty—Six-Monthly Periods, 1918. 1917. £ ' £ Auckland 473,466 413,922 Wellington .... s 571,918 469,530 Lvttelton 263,532 225,144 Dnnedin 231,534 200,161 Other ports... 293,037 284,681

For tlie first six months of 1913 the total was £1,720,379, made up thus:— Auckland, £464,491;,. Wellington, £443,742; Lvttelton, £246.160; Dunedin, £234,350; other ports, £331,636. "It will be noticed," said the Minister, "that the Customs duty collected at Wellington during the. six months of the present financial year exceeds tho amount for the corresponding period of 1913 by over £128,000, while the other three chief ports have only increased very slightly, and the smaller ports show a total decrease of £38,599 during the same period." The increases at Wellington are probably due to the proximity of the military training camps. . .

The figures for September are not yet available, but it is estimated that the valuo will be about £2,100,000. Thus the approximate value for nine months would bo £17,453,172. _ j "There is every indication," stated , Mr. Myers, "that, owing to the greatly increased cost of imported articles, the total value of imports for 1918 will be in oxcrsn of that for any pre-war year, despite the falling-off in the volume of goods landed from overseas." t
