BEER DUTY

THE WAR INCREASE.

The Minister of Customs has issued the following figures showing the totals of beer duty collected in the six months ended September 30, of the years 1918, 1917, and 1913:— • . £ 1918 '• 129,757 1917 94,388 • 1913 56,913 The increase in the amount collected during the six months ended September 30, 1918, over the amount for tho 1913 period is accounted for by the rise in the rate of duty (from 3d. per gallon with discount and allowances iii 1913 to practically 6d. per gallon net at present). In 1917 tho average rate for the greater part of the period was 4d. per gallon. This was raised in July to an average of sd. per gallon.
