N.Z. SOCIETY OF ACCOUNTANTS
Sir,—ln reply to Mr. Ernest W. Hunt's letter appearing in your issue of the 4th inst., I am not going to be side-tracked by discussing matters foreign to tho subject, and in order to mako the issuo quite clear, I dosire to state that the question before tho Central Chamber of Commerce was tho "protection of the businesses ,1 of those of our business and professional men who had been, or wero being called up to sorve their King and country, and it was felt that the least we, who wore unfit to go, could do, was to help look after the other fellow's interests and business, while he was really doing tho same service for us at the front.
When tho N.Z.S.A. were asked tn confer with the Central Chamber of Commerce on this worthy object, with a view to formulating a scheme for rendering some practical help in this direction, they gave the matter short shrift', and, in the words of the coun-
oil's reply, stated "it was decided that no further action should be tnken. ,: Now, in reply to Mr. Ernest W. Hunt'n '.'concise and definite question," I am of the opinion that'' in view of the council's decision in refusing their help to such a worthy cause, I was perfectly justified in. expressing myself as I did. •
Having answered Mr. Hunt's question, I should now like him to answer these questions:— (1) Has the council received any ap» plication from practising members of the N.Z.S.A. who have been called up, asking for their advice or assistance in 'arranging for the carrying ou of. their practice whilst on active service? If so, what reply has. been given by the council?
(2) In view of the many practising accountants who have enlisted, what assistance, if any, has been offered or rendered to them by the oouncil of the N.Z.S.A. in arranging for the carrying on of their respective practices whilst on active service?
With perfectly refreshing candour Mr. Hunt tells us that the "Year (?) Book" for year ended Juno 30, 1916, with the full report of the annual meeting,, held in August, 1916, "will shortly be printed." Is it any wonder that I have always strenuously opposed sueb MaitorLness ?
I am particularly interested. t& Mi. Ernest W. Hunt's statement that "two general meetings of the branch have been held during the present calendar year," and would like him to give us thp dates and the business for which {hey were called. According to thn rules of the local branch, "the annual meeting shall be held in the month, of September in eaca yeor." 'When was the.last annual (?) meeting held?—l am, cto., •
