MORALS IN CHRISTCHURCH
'ALLEGATIONS DENIED. By Telettraph-Press Association. Christchuroh, October 8. A large deputation from the Christchurch Ministers' Association waited on the City Council with a request that the river banks bo lighted by electricity. Members of the deputation based the request chiefly on the prevalent immorality, and urged that the best way to check it was to flood the dark places with light. The council resolved to request the police to furnish a report regarding the allegations of immorality. The question of lighting was referred to : the Electricity Committee. '
"Christclnirch to-day is the cleanest city in Now Zealand," said\ Police Superintendent Dwyer to-day to a reporter who asked his opinion on the riverbank allegations. "I defy anyone to say it is not." He added": "There is no known place of immorality in Christchurch to-day, and even the orewoman brothel has been, suppressed. I tell you this 18 the cleanest city in the Dominion."
The Hon. J. A. Hanan has just been supplied with statistics of the illegitimate births registered in New Zealand during 1917. Those in the chief provincial districts are: Auckland, 369; "Wellington, 322; Dunedin, 163; Christchurch, 161.
