Second Lieutenant Herbert W. Cox, killed in action on September 23, was tlie.eldost son of Mr. James T. G. Cox, school inspector, Balmoral Boad, Mount Eden. Ho was educated at the* Auckland Grammar Schcnl and the University College, and at tho time of his departure was employed in the treasury of the-'Education Board, Auckland. Enlisting us a privatt in the Eighth lteinforcements, he was at'tached to the artillery. After a short ■service in Egypt lie proceeded to ftiince, where he was recommended for a commission. Returning J'rom London after completing his training in the artillery schools, he- was attached to the 4th Howitzer Battery of tho 3rd.Brigade, whore he met l:is death. His brother (Lieutenant Fred J. Cox), who lost the sight. of an eye at tho Samme, is expected to rcturn'in a draft duo in Auckland in a few days.
