THE GOVERNMENT'S INTERVENTION

DECISION OP THE MEN

The suggestion of the Acting-Prime Minister (Sir James Allen) that tjio imitters in dispute between the Cify Council and tho Wellington Tramways Union should be referred to a coiifereiico .was considered yesterday by shift meetings of tho men. Sir James Allen's suggestion was that the confertlicfi should consist of three delegates 'from each side, with the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. W. Newton) as chairman. "Before the conference is proceeded with," said the Acting-Prinio Minister in his letter to the union, "it is essential that tlie moil resume the , full performance of their duties in the same manner its prior to the occurrence, of tho dispute." The tramway men, at the meetings held yesterday, decided that they would accept the conference proposed by Sir James Allen, but would . t not resume work wider the old conditions until tho actual date , of the conference.

"Wo are ready to enrry out the wishes of the Government," said an official of the union to a Dominion' reporter lastSnight, "but we are not propared to ivqrk under the old unfair conditions for perhaps a week or a fortnight while the conference is'being iU'rangcd. As far as we arc concerned the conference can be held at once. When it opens we will work under tho old conditions pending its decision."

Tho City Council will meet this morning and ivill consider tho suggestion made by Sir Jnmos Allen and the tramwny men's reply.

Mr. H'. Semple, u'bo spoke at Mr. Ftaser's Alexandra Hall meeting last evening made n reference to the tramway dispute. He said that during the day he had' been with responsible Ministers of tho Crown and representatives of thd parties, that the matter was on a fair way to settlement, and that ho thought it would be settled in a -couple of days. " "Romomber," he added, "the men have got to get what they ask— 4d. an hour —and if they don't get it I am prepared to take any old risk that is on the cards to help them- to get it." (Applause.) i
