Mrs. Trevor Holmden (nee Janet Stout), who accompanied her husband as far as Australia, is at present [staying with relatives in Melbourne Mrs. John Neil (Duncdih) is at prosent visiting Wellington.

Miss Nellie Cnstio's concert party entertained the men at the Trentham Church of England Institute- last evening. Three youug ladies have already, applied to the Canterbury Aviation Company for enrolment as flying pupils at Sockburn, but the applications have had to be declined with regret, as tho company at present is accepting none but- candidates for the Royal Air' Force. Tho latest application was received on Thursday last from a young lady in a North Island country centre. She stated that her brother, who was in tho Royal Air Force, had been an instructor, before going to France, as a pilot, and had sent her many : books on ■ flying and on the different types of engines and machines in use. She had had a great deal of experience driving motorcars, and thoroughly understood the construction of a petrol engine- Although these applications cannot bo entertained whilo tho supply of candidates for the Air Force continues (says the "Lyttelton Times") it is regarded as a certainty thai many women will learn to fly at Sockbuni in the not far distant future. v

Miss Muriel Thompson has now been awarded the Croix de Guerre by the' French Government.for rescuing French wounded." Recently; she, with fifteen other British motor ambulance drivers, received tho Military Medal. Tho monthly meeting of tho Wosloy Church Ladios' Guild was held yesterday aftornoou. Mr. Bayley, of Canada, was welcomed by the hostess of the guild, Mrs. T. Evans, aud by the Rev; ,J. G. -Chapman. Mr, Bayley road numerous extracts from letters re-, contly ' received from Canada showing how beneficial, prohibition had been there. Some of these letters were Written by Governors of the provinces, by teachers, and by women magistrates, and all gavo evidence of tho good effect of prohibition. Mrs. A. It. St, Mary'a Bazaar, The queen contest at St., Mary's bazaar continues to attract, the attention of the public. The Hostel Queen still leads, with 22,005. rotes, followed by the Altar' Society Queen, with 19,153 votes, and the Hibernian Queen with 19,050 votes. The other stalls show as follows:—Sweets, 7643; Children of Mary, 7495; Brooklyn, 4916. Avery lino performance was given last evening by a talented juvenile combination known as "The Butterflies." The young ladies gave a really, delightful exhibition of'their art. The Highland dancing competition was won'by Miss Annie Currie, with Miss H. Needham second, and Miss Elsio Burns third.
