PRICE OF COAL
EFFECT OF MINERS' ACTION. The public is about to feel the effect of the recent increase in wages granted to miners. During the negotiations it was openly stated that any concession to the Tiien would bo passed on; in effect, that whatever increases the men received would bo paid by the public, who would be charged moro for their coal. The miners received sn increase of 10 per cent. \ Tho local representatives of Wnikato companies were advised yesterday that tho following increases would operate from to-day :—-Household coal, 2s. per ton; steam and kitchen coal, Is. 6d. • per tort; rough (unscreened), coal, Iβ. per ton. This increaso, it is stated, is regretted by the companies, but hag been made necessary solely by tho granting of 10 per cent, additional wages to the minors. Tho latter took effect on September 21. It is expected that the Westport companies will advance their prices, but so fnr no advice to that effect is to hand.
