WELLINGTON SOUTH V. NGAIO. The return match between tho Wellington South and Ngaio Clubs was played in the Newtown Public Library ou Saturday evening and proved very enjoyable. A cordial welcome was extended to the visitors by Mr. W. Berry, and happily acknowledged by Mr. James. The players had about two hours and a half at their disposal, nnd at, tho end of that time the home team were retnrned winners by a margin of two games. Their greater strength at the lower boards gave them the victory, and enabled them to regain tho laurels lost at Ngaio early in June. The absence of Messrs. WELLINGTON SOUTH OLTJB. ■ The Wellington South Club's'annual handicap tourney has been won by Mr. G. P. Anderson, win won the club championship earlier in the year. He has thus scored "the double' two years in succession, thereby proving Himself a very consistent performer. His score in the tourney just concluded is thirteen wins and one loss. Ihe second and third prizes are being fought out bv Messrs. AVelton (12-3), Bat-. Jer (11-3), and H. .J. Thompson (11—3) the two last-named each having agame to play. NGAIO CLUB. Tho Ngaio Club' 3 annual handicap tourney has been won by_ Mr. k H. L. James, who is well known-in Mw Zealand chess circles, having won several prizes at championship congresses (including two brilliancy prizes). His score on this occasion is eight wins and 0110 loss. Mr. A. B. Tonp conies next with seven wins, two losses,, wlucli score Mr. Lindsay can equal if successful with his outstanding- frame. The wirmers of the Neaia, Club's annual tourney are as follow:—1913, H._ \. Croxton: 1914 1 , A. B..Topp;-1910 1 .D.Wild; 1916, A. B. Topp;. 1917, F. J. Brooker; and 1918, H. L. James.

WELLINGTON CLUB. The contest for the championship of our parent club was advanced a further stage last week. W. E. Mason defeated Messrs. Kelling and lotilry, and Barnes won an adjourned game from W. Mackay that had previously looked dvawisli. The issue is now reduced to two players, viz... W. E- Mason and A. W. 0. Davies. The former has scored LTwins, 1 loss, and ho has yet to coinploto his game wtih Still, which stands adjourned in s a very even state. Danes is the only undefeated player m the contest, his tally being 11 wins and 1 draw. He has yet to play Messrs. Barnes, Fouhy. and Kelling. Interest is now uaturnUy centred on the fixtures of the two leaders. Mr. Barnes, who has held the championship of the club for many .years past, Ims lost two games and drawn one, and ho cannot, therefore, •■equal Mr. Mason's s'lore. The ladder match Ward v. M'Nair ended in favour of the former, who won both games.
