; (f— DEATH OF. PRIVATE WILLIAM H. HAMPTON. ■ , - Private William H. Hampton, reported killed in action on September li), was for. many years keenly interested in the trade union movement in Wellington, and took a great share in the work of organisation. With Messrs. D. M'Laren and M. J., Eeardon, the lato Sergeant E. J: Carey, and others, he was instrumental in forming , several 'unions now ■;n existence.' His own union was the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners. He was at one time president of the Trades and Labour Council, and delegate at various New Zealand Labour conferences. He was a brother of Mr. 11. Hampton, president of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. In later years he entered the building and contracting business as a partner in' the firm of French and Hanipton. Ono department of Labour actjvity in which he was particularly interested was that touching municipal improvement and housing reform. In the latter sphere he was responsible for progress in Wellington and other cities. In the theory of municipal government he was regarded as very well read. His interest in educational affairs found scope in membership of the Mitclielltown School Committee for five years (three years as chairman), and chairmanship of the Te Aro-Mitchelltown.committee for two years. He did excellent work, and his ■sincere interest in their welfare won for him the high regard of both the staff and the children. Private Hampton was horn in the Ashburton district 43 years ago. He leaves a wife and family of two sons and threo daughters. His 'eldest son, Hoy, has been at the, front for nearly three years, and was recently promoted to be corporal, mentioned in dispatches, and awarded the Military Medal for bravery, in the field. He is now in a convalescent home in Englaod, recovering from wounds. Private Hampton left New Zealand with the Thirty-third' Reinforcements. , .
