Mead was charged with wilfully deceiving the Government Statistician respecting the number of his children. Mead first gave the - number,as three, and subsequently four. Investigations elicited the fact that, he had three' legitimate children aud| one illegitimate child. Regarding, the lastnamed,, the defendant .alleged it had. been.takenby his, wife to be : brought up as the twin brother of her last, child, both legitimate and illegitimate having arrived about the same time. Defendant,- however, was not supporthis wife and three legitimate children, hut.was now living with another woman. He had now been-put into Class A o\ the Second Division. He contended that he had acted in all good faith, heing« of opinion that the illegitimate child had been-legally-adopted.;. He'was lined £10, in ■ default .two Months' imprisonment. -The: Magistrate informed defendant- that ho .was living like a beast.
